ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES FACED IN GOAL-SETTING – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED.
Thank you so much you lovely people for sticking with me throughout and showing great interest in reading the goal-setting blog series.
I’m
extremely humbled by the decision you have taken to visualize and write down
your goals, thereby making one of the immense investments of your life.
Setting goals and never checking back on them is one of the foremost concerns that has brought me to write this blog today.
Like you, even I’ve had similar issues on
being forgetful on reminding myself of my goals and I think that attitude has
to be broken and addressed immediately.
This blog is
a self-reminder and a solution stone I’m writing to myself. I'm sure to figure them out as I advance out for a solution to all the queries and challenges you’ve
poured in for me to answer.
Let me begin with the most popular query:
1. How do I stop postponing the everyday goals?
The one-stop solution to this question is by performing a feasibility
study on the tasks you have written on a particular day.
Checking for feasibility means checking if the task can truly be accomplished or does it require time? You know about your schedules and therefore don’t set targets that are beyond your control.
Prioritization is one of the key aspects of daily goals. If the goal in
the highest rank is ticked off, don’t worry too much about the ones that
follow. Certain tasks take time – in that case, you can;
·
Have
a strong deadline from which you won’t deviate
·
Check
for feasibility
·
What
is the priority given to it – if it belongs to the bottom don’t pressurize.
· If you think you won’t do it today – better don’t write it down.
2. How do I stop being forgetful about the goals?
In the morning, after your usual rituals are completed – open the diary where you have written your long-term goals. Have a glance at them and check where you are standing currently (I can’t stop telling you how effective this method is)
Then move on to monthly goals – review them and lastly come to the daily and weekly goal section. Spare not more than 5 mins every day to do this.
Once goals are set, it is important to revisit and reassess them. Being aware of your progress motivates and inspires you greatly.
If you are using any printable planner (like the one I gave you) or sticky notes – paste them at a place where they are most visible.
3. My goals take away most of my time – How to get them done quickly?
'Getting to finish targets quick does not always depict a sign of
efficiency and being slow doesn’t mean inefficiency'.
If you think your targets take time – break them down for the week. You need not finish every other task today itself, rather have deadlines that work for you.
4. Preparing an effective To-do list is still an issue.
Understand that you can’t be productive and highly effective every day.
There may be days when you need a break and can’t work. They are completely
alright.
To prepare an achievable To-do list, ask yourself these questions:
·
What
is the benefit I get if I finish this task today?
-
List
them down or tell them to your mind.
·
How
many hours can I spare today to finish it rather than postpone and suffer?
·
Are
today’s goals concrete and sure to be ticked off?
- If not simply don’t write them.
5 There is no formula to prepare a To-do list. Don’t pile up on so many things and end up postponing them. Keep the list as small and achievable as possible.
5. My goals end up looking too large for the day and become unachievable.
If you are someone who utters this statement, then your goals have not
met the ‘SMART’ criteria. Check my blog to know what they are.
Rewarding yourself for even a small achievement pushes you forward. Your rewards can include – having a packet of chips all alone :D lol, re-watching a favorite movie, a sip of tea/coffee, etc.
Being lethargic and casual are the main reasons for them to become unachievable. My suggestion is that you re-read this blog – I’m pretty confident that I’ve sorted out all the possible problems and expressed solutions to solving them.
“A multitude of studies has shown that setting challenging yet attainable
goals increases the prospect of pursuing and fulfilling ambitions”
All of us have the capacity to adapt and achieve. Through goal-setting, we raise the bar according to our potential.
In the words of Pablo Picasso:
“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success”.
